Media information regarding coronavirus: construction progress of major project THE CIRCLE

Construction of the major project THE CIRCLE at Zurich Airport is progressing. Due to the current situation concerning the coronavirus, there are now fewer people working on the building site than there would be in normal circumstances, and their health is our top priority. Some suppliers are also unable to operate at present. Certain facilities will therefore be subject to around 2 or 3 months’ delay. However, the building should be completed as quickly as possible – one reason being that the University Hospital of Zurich healthcare centre aims to commence operations as soon as possible. The public facilities will be opened gradually, starting in autumn.

Our main priority is the health and protection of our employees
The construction site for the major project THE CIRCLE at Zurich Airport is still open, although work is restricted by the current situation and various requirements regarding protective measures. The joint ownership company for THE CIRCLE, consisting of Flughafen Zürich AG and Swiss Life AG, has implemented extensive protective measures together with the companies involved in order to comply with the official directives. For example, additional washing and disinfection points have been set up and free parking spaces provided so that the tradespeople working there can travel individually. We are paying close attention to the rules regarding maintaining a distance. All of the companies involved are required to strictly observe the protective measures.

Slight delay in schedule
With the present restrictions, the joint owners are expecting minor delays in completion and operation. Based on our current knowledge, we anticipate delays of between two and three months. Not all tenants are affected by this. The difficult situation may further affect the schedule, depending on how long it lasts. The joint ownership company for THE CIRCLE, together with the contractor HRS Real Estate AG and its subcontractors, is doing everything possible to minimise delays for the other tenants and modules. The slight delays will mean that the opening celebrations planned for September 2020 will also be postponed to a later date. The new dates will be announced later.

The University Hospital of Zurich healthcare centre is a high priority
The joint ownership company is aware of the great importance of the outpatient healthcare centre being established at THE CIRCLE by University Hospital Zurich. The completion of the hospital infrastructure University Hospital Zurich is therefore a top priority. The spaces should be handed over to the University Hospital in the summer of 2020 as planned, and open on schedule in autumn 2020.

The joint ownership company of THE CIRCLE would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their great commitment, even during the difficult conditions of the current coronavirus crisis.

THE CIRCLE will become a central attraction that strengthens Zurich Airport. Once it opens, it will be possible to hold conferences for up to 2,500 guests directly at Switzerland’s largest national airport. Two Hyatt Group hotels, various brand worlds, an outpatient healthcare centre run by the University Hospital of Zurich, attractive office space, and arts, culture, restaurants and education facilities will round out the wide range at Zurich Airport. THE CIRCLE will thus enrich the whole region, both culturally and economically. The project is being built by a joint ownership company, with Flughafen Zürich AG and Swiss Life AG holding stakes of 51% and 49% respectively.
