Unique News-Flash No. 19 - Zurich Airport Traffic Figures - August 2004

Lead & Kurzbeschreibung nur in Englisch; Dokument in Deutsch.
During August 2004 1'664’392 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport, a loss of 3.5% versus August 2003 (-4.4% previous year). Year to date, passenger figures increased by 1.3% (-5.7%). This negative growth figure for August versus previous year was to be expected, as August 2003 figures were enhanced by a strong recovery from SARS and Iraq. Transfer passengers are down by 22.7% (-11.8%) to 477’378. Year to date the decrease is 22.6% (-10.0%). The transfer rate which was at 35% for the full year 2003 and saw a seasonal record low of 24.4% in July, had a rebound to 28.7% (27.7% YTD), following reductions to Swiss’s network. O/D passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) have risen by 7.6% versus previous August (15.4% YTD).
The YTD low cost market share is 8.5% (4.0% previous year). Air Berlin has the largest stake of 34%, followed by EasyJet (24%, decreasing) and Helvetic Airways (17%, increasing). As of winter timetable, EasyJet will cut various routes, including the connections to ZRH. However, the large demand for flights to London has already prompted BA and Helvetic to offer new connections to Gatwick, thereby fully compensating for the lost connection to Luton.
Air Traffic Movements (atm’s) decreased by 1.1% to 23’806 in August versus previous year (-6.1%). YTD the decrease is 3.3% (-2.8%). The average Passenger per movement figure (scheduled & charter only) has eased from 81.0 in July to 80.5 in August (82.0 previous year). Year to date it’s at 75.1 (70.8).
