During December 2005 1'323’765 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport, a gain of 3.5% versus December 2004. For the full year 2005, passenger figures increased by 631’746 or 3.7% to 17’884’652. In 2005, SWISS transported 0.75 million more passengers, whereof 0.43 million more transfer passengers, resulting in a market share rise of 2 percentage points to 50%. Air Berlin added 155’320 passengers, followed by British Airways (+73’666), Fly Niki (+60’281), Styrian Airways (+50’685) and United Airlines (+47’431). Transfer passengers are up by 2.8% to 411’674 in December. The 9.9% year to date increase to 5’286’570 transfer passengers indicates a strengthening of Zurich’s hub function. The transfer rate which was at 28.0% for the full year 2004 and saw a seasonal record low of 24.4% in July 2004, is currently back at 31.2% in December and at 29.6% for the full year 2005. O/D passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) have risen by 3.1% to 895’814 versus previous December. For the full year 2005 O/D passengers have risen by 1.2% to 12’486’199, 0.7% above the record level of the year 2000. The highest YTD contribution was brought along by SWISS (+8.1%).
The 2005 low cost market share is 8.0% (8.8% previous year). Air Berlin has the largest stake of 48.5%, followed by Helvetic Airways (30.1%), Germanwings (12.1%) and Fly Niki (9.3%).
Air Traffic Movements (atm’s) decreased by 2.9% to 20’000 in December versus previous year. With a YTD increase of 703 movements or 0.3% to 267’363, air traffic movements are nearly unchanged. Rising passenger numbers and steady movement figures resulted in a higher YTD average passenger per movement figure which rose from 74.7 in 2004 to 78.0 in 2005 and was mainly induced by the average seat load factor which rose from 65.1% in 2004 to 66.7% in 2005.
