Thomas Kern to become new CEO of Flughafen Zürich AG
The Board of Directors of Flughafen Zürich AG has appointed Thomas E. Kern as the company's new CEO. He will assume his new duties on 15 January 2008. CFO Beat Spalinger wil leave the company as of April 2008. His position will be taken over by a current member of the airport's management staff.
On 22 August of this year, CEO Josef Felder submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors of Flughafen Zürich AG with effect from the end of August 2008. The company announced that Josef Felder would remain Chief Executive Officer until a successor is found and is able to assume the position.
The Board of Directors immediately launched a search for suitable candidates and is pleased to have found in Thomas E. Kern (53), CEO of Globus group until the end of 2006, a proven leader to be the new CEO.
Duties to be assumed on 15 January 2008 Thomas E. Kern will take over the office of CEO on 15 January 2008, at which time Josef Felder will leave the company. In the months following the handover of the CEO's office, Josef Felder will remain available to the new CEO and the Board of Directors. Thomas E. Kern has been a member of the Board of Directors of Flughafen Zürich AG since the General Assembly in 2006. He will step down from this office with immediate effect in order to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
The Board of Directors will submit their proposal for the new appointment to the General Assembly of Shareholders for approval on 17 April 2008.
Internal successor found for CFO Beat Spalinger
Beat Spalinger is going to pursue a new professional challenge. In the role of CFO, Beat Spalinger oversaw the merger of the former FIG (Flughafen Immobilien Gesellschaft) with the former FDZ (Flughafen Direktion Zürich) and the IPO of Flughafen Zürich AG. In a demanding phase of Zurich Airport's development, Beat Spalinger earned respect and recognition within the airport and beyond as he consistently mastered a succession of challenging business tasks. Of particular note are his achievements in connection with the refinancing of 5th expansion phase, devising financial and balance-sheet solutions for risks associated with compensation for aircraft noise, and the development of the company's international activities.
The board regrets Beat Spalingers decision to leave the company. For his exceptional achievments the board expresses its sincere gratitude. The Board of Directors has decided to appoint a person from the airport's current management staff as the new CFO.
Daniel Schmucki, currently responsible of controlling, treasury & investor relations for Flughafen Zürich AG, will assume the role of CFO immediately following the 2008 General Assembly of Shareholders. Corporate renewal from within Andreas Schmid, Chairman of the Board of Directors, is delighted with the announced succession solutions: "A careful and diligent examination revealed that the best candidates to assume the positions of CEO and CFO are already part of our organisation. Flughafen Zürich AG is renewing its top management from its own internal resources."
