Traffic Figures
During December 2008 1’610’186 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport, a gain of 0.2% versus December 2007. For the full year 2008, passenger figures increased by 6.6% to 22’099’233. In 2008, SWISS transported 1.1 million more passengers, whereof 0.79 million additional transfer passengers, resulting in a market share rise of 2 percentage points to 57%. Air Berlin added 359’000 passengers, followed by Singapore Airlines (+107’000) and easyJet (+100’000). Transfer passengers are up by 10.5% to 623’138 in December. The 11.0% year to date increase to 7’759’300 transfer passengers points out a further strengthening of Zurich’s hub function. The transfer rate which was at 35.2 in December 2007 and 33.8% for the full year 2007, is currently at 38.8% in December 2008 and at 35.2% for the full year 2008. O/D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) have fallen by 5.4% to 982’163 versus previous December. For the full year 2008 O/D passengers have risen by 4.5% to a new record level of 14’263’306. The highest YTD contribution was brought along by Air Berlin (+32.8%).
The 2008 low cost market share is 10.2% (8.5% previous year). Air Berlin has the largest stake of 65.3%, followed by Fly Niki (9.4%) and Germanwings (8.9%).
Air Traffic Movements (atm’s) are at 20’259 in December, a minus of 3.2% versus December 2007. YTD air traffic movements went up by 2.4% to 274’991. The average seat load factor saw an increase by 0.5 percentage points to 70.6%. The average number of passengers per movement rose from 92.7 to 95.4 (+2.9%). Freight figures saw an increase of 3.6% to 388 thousand tons in 2008.
Commercial Activities
Total turnover (net sales to consumers) during December was 43.4 Mio CHF (+ 3.6% versus previous year). Turnover per departing passenger in December was CHF 53.87, which is 3.4% over last year.
