During December 2010 1'730'626 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport, a gain of 0.2% versus December 2009. The year to date passenger growth stands at +4.3% and led to a new all-time record passenger volume of 22'878'251 for 2010.
The December results have to be seen in light of the severe winter weather that caused numerous flight delays and cancellations throughout Europe. The often time critical transfer connections where hit hardest. Unlike other European airports Zurich always stayed open.
O&D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) increased by 5.0% to 1'097'869 compared to previous December (YTD +7.7%). Transfer passengers are down by 7.1% to 625'740 in December (YTD -1.4%). The transfer rate which was at 39.1% last December is currently at 36.2% (YTD 34.6%).
The current low cost passenger market share is at 10.1% (YTD 10.9%), showing an increase in passenger figures of 3.7% (YTD +10.4%) versus previous year.
Air Traffic Movements (ATM’s) increased by 0.6% to 20'557 in December versus previous year (YTD +2.5%). The increase divides into a loss of -1.2% for airlines (YTD +2.0%) and a gain of 12.8% for general aviation and others (YTD +5.7%).
In December 2010 the average passenger per movement figure (airline passengers only) was at 98.4 (97.2 previous year) or 100.4 YTD (98.3 previous year). The average seat load factor saw an increase of 0.3 percentage points to 70.4% (YTD 72.9%).
Total turnover (net sales to consumers) during December was CHF 45.0m (+2.8% versus previous year). Turnover per departing passenger in December was CHF 52.0, which is 2.6 percent higher than last year. Year to date December, total turnover saw an increase of 5.1% (CHF 482.0m) and turnover per departing passenger increased by 0.7% (CHF 42.1).
