Energy Facility "Mitte" –The centerpiece of the CO₂-free energy supply

As part of its net-zero strategy, Zurich Airport Ltd. is constructing a new central energy facility by 2027.

In combination with a new low-temperature network and a seasonal underground thermal storage system, this facility will enable largely emissions-free heating and cooling of the airport's central area (terminals and surrounding buildings).

The new energy center will be built underground between Parking Garage 6, the Radisson Blu Hotel, and Operation Center 1. This underground location preserves valuable above-ground space due to its central position.

The facility will house machine rooms for heat pumps and chillers, along with other technical infrastructure. Its proximity to the airport core minimizes heat and cooling losses from long piping routes, thereby facilitating the transition from today’s high-temperature network to a low-temperature system.
