Expansion of the Passport Control Hall –More Space for Entry and Exit

The passport control hall at Zurich Airport is being expanded after around 20 years of operation.

The underground passport control hall is located at the heart of Zurich Airport, between Docks A and B. Together with the Airside Center, it was opened in 2004. The hall is the central hub for immigration, emigration, and transfer traffic between the Schengen and non-Schengen areas at Zurich Airport.

New legal requirements for entry into the Schengen Area are leading to an increased need for space in the passport control hall. Plus, the hall often reaches its limits during peak periods. The expansion will allow passenger flows to be more clearly separated: immigration, emigration, and transfer immigration will each have their own dedicated areas. At the same time, more space and comfort will be created for passengers, along with additional border control lanes and e-gates.

Construction work will take place while operations continue. It will begin with excavation work in front of the Airside Center. Once the extension is completed, modifications will be made in the existing hall.

With the commissioning of the expanded passport control hall, passenger processes can be improved, and border control adapted to meet the new legal requirements.
