The operating regulations stipulate which runways must primarily be used for take-offs and landings at which times of the day. In this context, the political and statutory requirements and the varying lengths of the runways need to be considered, and it must be ensured that safe flight operations are possible even under changing weather conditions.

Zurich Airport's operating regulations are shaped, among other things, by Germany's strict flight restrictions. The closure of German airspace restricts approaches through southern German airspace, especially in the mornings, evenings and at weekends:

• Monday – Friday: 21:00 – 07:00
• Weekends and bank holidays in Baden-Württemberg: 20:00 – 09:00

Approach and departure routes to and from Zurich Airport are configured in such a way as to avoid aircraft noise over densely populated areas where possible, thereby reducing the disturbance caused to residents. The Noise Management department monitors adherence to these flight paths in accordance with the Cantonal Airport Act (§3).
