Flight movements –Operating hours, concepts and routes

Data and information on operating hours, operating concepts and flight routes at Zurich Airport.

Current runway concept

Operating hours at Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport operates between 06:00 and 23:30. The final half hour (23:00–23:30) is reserved for clearing delays. During the night curfew, all aircraft require a special permit to take off or land at Zurich Airport.

Influences on flight operations

Flight operations are affected by a wide range of factors. These include weather conditions, political frameworks, technical disruptions, infrastructural limitations, and airspace capacity. As a result, the operating concept may need to be adjusted.

Weather-related impacts on flight operations

Weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, winds (wind direction: westerly winds, Bise, etc.), gusts, fog or low cloud cover can significantly affect the planning and execution of flight operations. For safety reasons and to adapt to changing conditions, the following impacts may occur:

  • Delays: Adjustments to the runway concept can lead to take-off and landing delays.
  • Cancellations: Airlines may cancel flights for safety reasons when conditions are unfavorable.
  • Schedule changes: Flight times or routes often need to be adjusted at short notice.

Flight monitoring

The arrival and departure routes at Zurich Airport are planned to avoid densely populated areas as much as possible. Compliance with these noise reducing flight paths is continuously monitored.

If deviations from the prescribed route occur, there must be comprehensible reasons: for example, avoiding thunderstorm clouds or following air traffic control instructions.

If no valid reason is identified, an investigation is initiated. The pilot concerned is asked to provide a statement. Additional discussions with the respective airlines often take place. If the investigation is unsatisfactory, a report may be filed with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation.

This continuous monitoring helps to sustainably improve airlinesdeparture behaviors.
