Protected green spaces

More than half of the airport site is undeveloped and is not directly utilised for aviation. This includes all kinds of green spaces, some of which are nature conservation areas.

The 74-hectare nature conservation area "Klotener Riet", which is located between runways 16/34 and 14/32, comprises around 34 hectares of low moorlands of national importance. Together with the other nature conservation areas adjacent to the airport, this is what remains of the extensive former marsh landscape. Many different species of animals and plants live here, some of which are very rare.

Maintaining the conservation value and guaranteeing security

Care for nature

To retain their ecological value, the green spaces require regular maintenance. Another reason for interventions is the security requirements of flight operations. Maintenance work in nature conservation areas is defined by the cantonal office for nature conservation in collaboration with Flughafen Zürich AG. Flughafen Zürich AG is responsible for maintaining the other, operational green spaces, e.g. along the runways.
