Autonomous shuttle for personnel – airside
FAQ
In preparation for the test phase, a so-called robotaxi was deployed to create the necessary data set (mapping). After that, the shuttle buses began running regularly and manually, with a driver at the wheel, along the route so that the algorithm could learn everything about the various vehicles, objects and situations. In a further step, a remote cockpit was set up at the Innovation Hub from which the journey can be monitored remotely. In addition, driving commands can also be sent. Following intensive training of the remote operators, the bus now operates autonomously under supervision from the remote cockpit and with the safety driver seated in the driver’s seat on board. This enabled the safety driver to intervene directly via the steering wheel or brakes if necessary. Following extensive training of the algorithm, numerous tests, countless adjustments to the software and many miles covered,
Nimbus & Stratus have finally been ready for a level up since early May 2026: Rear Seat. With this milestone achieved, Zurich Airport is the first airport in Europe where an autonomous bus is operating at this advanced level. The safety driver now sits in the back seat of the bus, and the journey is largely controlled and monitored from the remote cockpit. The safety driver can now only initiate an emergency brake. The next steps involve collecting more data to further test and refine the algorithm, so that the bus will soon be able to operate without a safety driver. The ultimate goal is to achieve a driverless level, with monitoring and control carried out entirely from the remote cockpit.
